Frequently Asked Questions About Tires

Keep Your Tires Well Serviced At Pearl Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram

Perhaps one of the most important parts of your vehicle, but also one of the most ignored, are your tires. Not only do your tires keep you moving, they are also relied upon to ensure that you stay firmly planted on the road, grip the road when you slam on the brakes, and help to get you safely over whatever type of terrain or inclement weather that may come. In order to keep your drive running smoothly, it's best to take care of your vehicle's tires and to routinely have them maintained and/or replaced.

What Are The Different Types Of Tires?

There are four main tire options: all-season, winter, summer, and performance. Each one offers a different set of pros and cons and, since we live within the changing seasons of Illinois, should be considered on a seasonal basis.

  • All-Season Tires - These are the go to tires that, like their title states, are meant for all seasons. They provide drivers with a good amount of tread life and a quiet ride and do well on the summer wet roads and light winter snow. Consider them the sneaker or the tire world; not ideal for deep snow or summer sand, but will keep you going.
  •
  • Winter/Snow Tires - Designed with a more flexible rubber, deep and unique tread patterns, and biting edges, winter tires are ready for the snow, ice, and freezing temperatures that winter is known for, especially here in Illinois.
  •
  • Summer Tires - When it comes to warm temperatures and rainy weather, summer tires are your best bet. With less grooves, you'll find they offer better performance capabilities, but they still have tread to keep a firm grasp on the road.
  •
  • Performance Tires - If you're looking for the best driving performance, you'll want performance tires. More rubber on the road means better cornering, braking, speed, and agility performance that makes for an exhilarating drive.

How Can I Make Sure My Tires Don't Wear Out?

Believe it or not, not all four tires wear evenly. Depending on how you drive and even where you drive, certain tires will wear more than others. In order to keep each tire in a similar wear schedule, you'll want to have them rotated often; most technicians recommend rotating your tires at every oil change.

When Should I Replace My Tires?

You should always make sure to inspect your tires. If the tread is too low, the tire wall has been damaged or is cracked, or you're losing air pressure often, your tires will most likely need to be replaced.

How do you know if your tread is too low? A tried and true method to determine your tread depth is the Penny Test. Stick Lincoln upside down in the tread and if you see any of his head, your tread is too low.

How Do I Know What My Tire Size Is?

If you've determined that it's time to replace your tires, you'll want to know what the size is. If you look on the side of your tire, you'll see a jumble of letters and numbers (sort of like P215/65R15 95H): this is the information you need. The first letter tells you what type of vehicle the tire is intended for (P stands for Passenger vehicle). The three numbers after the letter are your tire's width (215 is 215 millimeters). The next two numbers are the aspect ratio, which is how big the tire sidewall is in comparison to the height (65 means the height is 65-percent of the tire's width). The next letter is the construction (R stands for Radial). And the two numbers after that are the wheel diameter (15 means 15-inch diameter). With this information you should be able to order the tires you need, or you can stop by our dealership or contact us at (708) 620-7102 and we'll help you determine what size to order.
