The small village of Peotone, IL, is located about 50 miles south of downtown Chicago and is not far from several nearby landmarks and tourist attractions that welcome visitors of all ages. If you are searching for new places to discover with your family in your 2023 Jeep Compass Sport, here are three spots you can reach in less than half an hour from the village.

1. Peotone Mill

Located at 433 W Corning Avenue and right in the heart of Peotone, the Peotone Mill is one of the best-known structures in the village and a place you should not miss while in the area. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982, this wind-powered grist mill was constructed in the 1870s and used to provide a variety of grain products, including buckwheat, rye, and fine wheat flours.

Although the exact date on which the Peotone Mill ceased operations is not known, this structure was abandoned for nearly a century before the Peotone Historical Society started working on its restoration in the 1980s. Nowadays, this landmark is fully restored to its original look and can be visited throughout the year.

2. Kankakee River State Park

Sitting on the banks of the Kankakee River and offering excellent facilities for outdoor sporting and recreation, Kankakee River State Park is one of the best places to enjoy nature within driving distance of Peotone. Covering an area of about 4,000 acres, this state park was created in the late 1930s and can be reached in about 20 minutes from the village.

Open to the public every day between 6:30 am and 8:00 pm and located at 5314 IL-102, Kankakee River State Park is a wonderful spot for hiking, with plenty of nature trails that go through the different areas of the park and along the banks of the river. Other popular activities you can enjoy here include horseback riding, fishing, and overnight camping.

3. Perry Farm Park

Offering a variety of recreational opportunities, Perry Farm Park is another popular local landmark that can be reached in just 20 minutes by car from Peotone via route I-57. Open year-round from dawn to dusk, this place features beautiful nature trails, a large playground, a children’s museum, as well as picnic shelters and gazebos. Located at 459 N. Kennedy Drive in Bourbonnais, this local landmark also features a historic farmstead with barns, animal pens, gardens, and a farmhouse.
